MAN-DRY; A MENS GROOMING STORY

Man-dry_maxmade

Some of my favorite mens hair moments are definitely from the 70’s. There was just something about their swagger and style. There was a confidence in the time and energy they put into their hair…

Men used to be so experimental and daring when it came to their locks. Maybe even more to the point of their female counterparts. What I love about it, nearly as much as the styles themselves, is the men had no qualm in doing so. They knew how to use a hair dryer, and they knew how to apply product to get the perfect volume and finish, yet they were still masculine and cool about it!
I’m going to relive and hopefully relight those sexy 70’s hair moments and show a bit of va-voom in a modern street style… And hopefully give you guys a few tips on products and styling along the way.

Styling Tips

I’ve blow dried all the boys hair using mostly my fingers. The only time I used a brush and dryer together  was pretty much on Dylan, because of his hair length and where I had to straighten any cowlicks and hair lines.
A Denam brush is my choice when it comes to mens blow drying they’re easy to hold and they give great lift and tension.

Freshly washed or next day washed is going to help you to get the best volume and ease when it comes to styling in this case.

I started with a good pea size amount of ‘Stand Tough’ Extreme Hold Gel from the Redken ‘For Men’ Range. I really like this product as it’s light and has a good hold. It’s easy to massage through the hair which I do, by starting at the back of the head and working the product through the hair from roots to ends until I reach the front of the hair line. Make sure you have got the product evenly from the roots to the tips. The other thing I like about this product is, it doesn’t get greasy even in oily hair.

I always start a mens blow dry  from the bottom and work my way up. Pushing the hair in an upwards motion. This is what gives you the volume. When you’re doing it yourself  drop your head down to your knees and blow dry the hair upside down pulling the hair towards the ground.

You can feel when you have dried all the product through the hair and added a good amount of volume. Your hair will feel super light and fluffy.  All that’s left to do is, flip your head and add some product to shape and style. Simple!

Dave & Dylan
I used Redkens “Wool Shake” on these two boys. This product is great for adding a little texture and shape in longer styles. Go easy though. Spray it on your hands first and work through (mid lengths and ends first) till you get the hang of the strength of it. Then you can start spraying it straight on the hair.

Jordan & Shane
I used Redkens ‘Rough Clay’. You really need to warm this product up in your fingers before applying and less is definitely more when it comes to this product. It really does give a tough gritty matt texture.

James
James has a lot of hair, but it’s fine and soft. I used Redkens, ‘Wax Blast‘. Wax blast is a wax in a aerosol can. Much like a hairspray. It’s super light and soft to mould.. This product allows me to get a little shape, texture and hold but without adding any weight to the hair.
