Ever wonder how celebrities like Miranda Kerr and Lara Bingle manage to always look so effortlessly beautiful in their #selfies? Well, here I share the secrets I share with my celebrity clientele on how to create that cool, sexy, beautiful look that has people thinking you didn’t even try!
We’re all taking them, whether it’s for your Facebook profile or your weekly selfie-Sunday update on Instagram, and even more recently, your Tinder profile. On the launch of what Grazia UK describes as ‘The none rejection dating app”, Tinder has changed the way people look & talk about online dating – less taboo, and a lot more socially acceptable than ever before.
…Que all my single girlfriends now nagging me to do their hair & makeup so they can take their best #selfie possible, to front their Tinder profile!!
So here it is ladies, all my tips and tricks on creating that effortless, done-yet-un-done hair and that radiant, contoured, glowing complexion that highlights your features & shows off all your best assets… looking like you didn’t even try! (Thank me later!)
Step 1; Blow Dry. There is a simple 3 step process to achieving this done-yet-un-done loose wave that everyone can follow. No matter your hair thickness or texture, you need to blow dry product through to give the hair a consistent texture and volume. I used KMS Add Volume Body Builder Spray. This product is great for all hair types. It builds volume without weighing the hair down and works as a conditioner and de-tangler for those drier mid-lengths and ends. Spray product from roots to ends on each section before blow drying. *Tip; When blow drying, divide your hair into 4 sections: (1) the crown and part, (2/3) the sides and (4) the back. Separate each of these into as least 3-4 sections and blow dry. Note; Blow fry the top section forward over the face. This will help the hair to sit beautifully across your forehead after we have tonged.
Step 2; I find the middle part works best for this sort of wave, it allows the hair to fall down each side of the face framing it perfectly. Divide the hair into 2 inch sections starting on each side of the face and working your way back. Spray each section ever so lightly with KMS Hair Stay Medium Hold Spray before wrapping the hair around a medium size tong going away from the face. I used H2D Tong as it has 3 inter-changeable sized barrels (small, medium and large). You will notice in the picture above I started wrapping the hair around the tong a third of the way down the length of the hair. The reason for this is all about the way it’s going to fall on the face later. Don’t worry it will make sense in the next step.
Sexy Hair, I Don’t Care
Step 3; Once you have tonged your hair and allowed it to cool, loosely shake the curls apart with your fingers. Now here comes the key moves to this style. Spay the ends of your hair with KMS Hair Play Sea Salt Spray. Go easy, the idea is to give the hair some grit and texture but not to loose the wave. While the hair is slightly wet, tuck the front section of you hair – right where the first wave starts – behind your ears (see image above). This is the reason we started curling the hair a third of the way down! It gives us a more natural look, and when it dries and you release the hair, you will see how nicely the hair will fall over your forehead and face! Note; Leave hair behind your ears until the end of makeup. The longer the hair is there, the better the indent from the ear will be and the cooler the hair will fall and look!
Colour By Numbers
Step 4; This look is all about the skin. It’s all about making the skin look flawless and perfectly contoured without looking like you have makeup on. It’s all about enhancing the high points with a lighter coverage and the contours with a darker coverage. I highlight all the high points of the face – all the lighter lines – with YSL’s Touche Eclat (also known as Radiant Touch). If there is anyone out there that hasn’t had the opportunity to experience this product, well, prepare to be amazed! Start blending out your Radiant Touche with your fingers in a dabbing motion. No rubbing or wiping, the reason for dabbing is we want to work the product into the skin making them both one! Now to the darker colour you can see on our model Samie’s face. This again is a YSL product, but this time it is a foundation. YSL Le Teint Touche Eclat Foundation is from the same family and has similar properties as the Radiant Touche. It’s designed to attract and reflect light, leaving skin looking radiant and youthful. I suggest choosing a colour that is 2 shades darker than your natural skin tone. So in this case, I used a Beige 7 as Samie is naturally a beige 5. Easy! Note; It’s all in the blending remember. Dabbing motions to work the product into the skin and fading it out on the edges.
What Big Eyes You Have
Step 5; Like the face, you need to contour the eye to open the area , adding depth and to exaggerate the natural shape of the eyelid. The key to the perfect contoured eye is to choose a shadow that is a warmer version of your skin colour. I always turn to Becca Cosmetics Eyeshadow in Sable. This soft-warm beige shadow works perfectly on most skin tones and is easy to blend from your lash line up in to the contour and along the bottom lash line of your eye with ease. A cheeky little white-gold highlight with Becca Cosmetics Jewel Dust in the inner corners of your eye to reflect light into the eye and adding a point of focus, is a must!
Eyes Wide Open
Step 6; Attention to detail is what makes this simple look stand out from the rest. Brush those brows straight up and set with NARS Brow Gel. If you have any holes or need a little lift in the arch, fill the brow with NARS Brow Perfector Pencil -choose a colour one shade lighter than your natural brow colour. Curling your lashes as close to the eyelid as you can to open your eyes before topping them up with a thickening, lengthening and curling mascara. Benefit, They’re Real Mascara is a triple-threat mascara that also provides great separation through it’s specially designed brush head. Don’t forget to coat the bottom lash line too!
Lets get Cheeky
Step 7; Chisel those cheekbones with a warm toned bronzer to sculpt the face and add a healthy, summery glow! I can never go past Estee Lauder’s Bronze Goddess Bronzer in Medium for this look. A beautiful golden-terracotta colour with light reflecting particles that can be layered under the cheekbones and temples as a blush-bronzer or dusted over your neck and décolletage to give your tan a little lift. Tip; Place your contouring brush inline with the middle of your ear and work your way in towards the apples of your cheeks, staying right under your cheekbones! Note; Don’t be shy to suck in those cheeks to give you a good line to work with. Step back from the mirror with every stroke to put perspective in what you are doing!
Kiss me I’m Yours
Step 8; Nude lips bring out the warmth in your skin and most importantly make your lips look bigger. The trick to amping up the volume factor is to apply your lip colour with your finger tip. The curve of your finger will round off the edges therefore giving the illusion of bigger lips. Another tip is to make sure the nude has a base colour of your natural lip colour and a light sheen. I can never get my finger out of Estee Lauder’s Pure Colour Vivid Shine Lipstick in Brilliant Bare. Tip; Follow our new rule of ‘attention to detail’ and enhance the bow in the top lip by applying a little more of Becca’s White-Gold Jewel Dust with a cotton tip or fine tipped brush!
