Make the jump to a more luminous complexion with my step-by-step guide to youthful skin…
With so much emphasis on skin and creating the perfect complexion with makeup I really wanted to take the time to make sure I not only educate you on achieving a professional result but also talked about the importance of your skin’s health – no matter your age or skin type- when trying to achieve the sort of results you see on celebrities and in the glossy pages of your favourite fashion magazine or blog.
I’ve said this before and I will say it again, no matter how many of the latest foundations, concealers and illuminators you buy in the search for radiant youthful skin, the true results come from getting your skin in the ultimate shape first. Every great makeup look has been properly prepared with a skincare range that readies the skin to accept the makeup you apply, allowing your skin to truly glow!
To celebrate my focus on skin and with a little help from my friends at Elucent Skincare I have put together a step-by-step guide to preparing a more youthful complexion along with a guide to colours, shades and shapes that enhance will enhance your features in all the right spots for a forever young result.
Clean & Calm
1: Youthful looking skin starts with how you clean and refine the skin’s surface. Using a cleanser that gently cleanses the skin of impurities and makeup while also moisturising it, is the key to preserving your skin’s future. Elucent’s Gentle Cleanser with 2% AHA not only covers both these bases but gently exfoliates the skin using a combination of AHA’s, B3 & E all working together to gently lift dead skin cells, refining the skin’s surface for a smoother more youthful finish. Makeup glides over the skin’s surface more evenly allowing the use of less product and more refined finish.
2: Soothing the delicate skin around the eye area with hydration is one thing but improving the skins elasticity and contouring the eye area is imperative when achieving more youthful wide-eyed look. Elucent’s Eye Cream with 4% AHA’s uses a special blend of vitamins B3, C and E to gently smooth fine lines and wrinkles while stimulating your circulation under the eye area reducing the appearance of dark circles. Tip; Massage in a circular motion using your ring fingers to improve circulation and prep skin before concealer. The creamy hydrating formula will instantly stop concealer from grabbing on the skin’s surface.
The first signs of ageing skin is de-hydration and uneven skin tone. Sun damage, age spots and fine lines and wrinkles are common signs when it comes to uneven skin tone. Elucent’s Day Mosturizer with 4% improves the skin’s texture and tone with vitamin B3 and E whilst maintaining hydration by trapping water under the skin’s surface for deep hydration. With SPF 30+ to protect against the damaging effects of the sun Elucent’s Day Moisturiser has got all bases covered. Tip: massage into skin minutes before applying foundation to prepare skin with the perfect amount of hydration helping the foundation and the skin become one.
1: The key to making more mature skin look youthful is to use a foundation that has a velvet or demi-matt finish. This sort of finish gives your skin a more defused luminosity without the fear of your skin looking greasy and it gathering in creases.
2: Less is always more with foundation, you want skin to look as fresh as possible – use a highlighting concealer to build coverage around the eyes, across the top of the cheekbone and around the nose. The added benefit of using this type of concealer as it is designed to attract and reflect light making skin look more glowing while enhancing the shape of your face.
3: Add touches of blush in peach, rose and pink across the ‘top’ of the cheekbones and up toward the outer corners of the eyes into the hair line. This technique will elevate the cheekbones lifting the face up and out while brighten eyes. Tip; Steer clear from adding any colour on the apples of the cheeks as this can some times drag the face down or in.
4: Filling your brows properly can give your eyes and face a mini lift if done correctly. Use a pencil that is 2 shades lighter than your natural brow colour and fill in any gaps by stroking the pencil in small upward stokes like you are drawing tiny little hairs. Tip; To elevate and get maxim lift enhance the top line of the arch in your brow by tuning your pencil on it’s side and drawing a little up side down V.
The Eye Opener:
The name of the game to a more youthful wide-eyed effect is to dress eyes with warm toned neutrals shadows in bronze, brown, peach & golds. Use a soft pointy-tipped brush and gently push the brush loaded with your choice of the above shadow options into the contour of the eye. To find the contour of your eye look at your self in the mirror and swish the brush back and forth like a windscreen wiper from one corner of the eye to the other. This technique is going to widen the eye and give it depth. Note: I always accessories the eye with a gentle gold or luminous white gold shadow on the temples and the inner corners of the eyes to lift and brighten the eye.
To finish…curl lashes as close the root of the lash and then again midway up the lash before applying mascara to widen the eyes and accentuate lashes to the MAX!
I don’t think there has been a bigger focus on the importance or the results of using a lip liner as a colour and a way to shape your lips than now! The truth is it’s a rare occasion I use a lipstick when I’m on set. Lip pencils have a waxy finish making the wear far superior to any other product and they give you the control to define your lips for a fuller looking lip. Choose shades that have a warmer undertone like red, orange, peach, plum and browns to make lips look bright, full and ultimately youthful. Tip: If you’re not used to using colour, try blending a warm based nude shade on top with your index finger. Keep it to the centre of the lip for a more 3D effect.
