On her recent visit to Sydney, we scored the ultimate coup: shooting all-American model and social media star Rachel Cook for a sizzling MM exclusive!
As long time fans of the rising model and avid followers of her Instagram adventures, the Maxmade family love how she captivates her followers with playful updates for keeping swimsuit-fit and other daily antics.
Although originally from the USA, Rachel’s vibe is totally all-Australian in the way that many local fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands aspire to channel. She’s super cool, quietly confident and lives for music and the outdoors. In fact, she was fresh off road-tripping with a friend along the Australian coastline.
Shooting at Sun Studios with one of Sydney most renowned fashion photographers Steven Chee, and resident celebrity stylist Nadene Duncan, we set out to shoot Ms Cook in a relaxed yet polished editorial setting. Think studio lights and high octane looks that still capture her fun and globe-trotting spirit.

1. OFF DUTY, ARE YOU LOW MAINTENANCE OR HIGH GLAMOUR WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE?
I used to love playing with makeup off duty and trying out new looks. But now, I’m more of a low maintenance kind of girl. Less is more for me lately.
2. APART FROM PHONE/KEYS/WALLET, WHAT WON’T YOU LEAVE HOME WITHOUT?
Headphones! I love being able to listen to music when I’m walking or just at any chance I get…
3. HOW ABOUT WHEN YOU TRAVEL? ANY WEIRD ON-BOARD BEAUTY TRICKS?
Whenever I take a long flight, I always bring my Simple Micellar Cleansing Wipes to make sure my face is totally clean when I board, as well as throughout the flight. I’ll moisturise my with my favourite Origins Zero Oil Moisturizing Lotion earlier, and as soon as I settle on the plane. I really slather it on because airplane air can be so dry – and repeat before landing so I feel refreshed.
4. LAND, SKY OR SEA, WHAT PRODUCTS ALWAYS TRAVEL WITH YOU?
Definitely the two products I mentioned above. They’re my favourite! But in addition to those, I always have my Hourglass Veil Primer – it makes my skin feel so smooth. I think honestly my favourite part is just applying it because it feels so velvety! And then it would have to be my “Dior Diorskin Forever Cushion Foundation. It goes everywhere with me because it’s also quick and easy to apply, while looking really light and natural on my skin.
5. WHAT INTERNATIONAL BEAUTY BRANDS HAVE YOU DISCOVERED THAT WE SHOULD BE OBSESSED WITH TOO?
I recently discovered IGK Hair line and I am all about them lately! The whole range smells amazing and works so well! Plus, the bottle designs are really unique so it still looks cute, even when I’m messy and leave all my hair products out! I think they’re from the States like me, but that’s international for Australia!
6. YOU’RE HUNGOVER OR HAD A LATE NIGHT – WHAT’S YOUR BEAUTY FIX?
I love to use masks whenever my face feels tired! My favourite is Peter Thomas Roth 24k Gold Mask. It really works, and let’s be real – it’s just awesome that you get to rub sparkly gold goodness on your face! Then of course, there is concealer to put under my eyes to brighten and freshen things up. I use Too Faced, Born This Way Concealer. It’s magic!
7. CONFESS – DO YOU COMMIT ANY BEAUTY SINS ON A DAILY BASIS?
None that I know of? I will admit that when I am really lazy, I only use a makeup wipe to remove my makeup before bed. But this is rare.
8. YOUR BOD IS AMAZING – HOW DO YOU KEEP IT THAT WAY?
Well thank you! I love reformer Pilates… and I eat very simple foods! The less processed it is, the better it is for your body. Trust me, you will see the difference and your system will thank you in years to come.
9. FOR A BEAUTIFUL MIND, WHAT PHILOSOPHY DO YOU LIVE BY?
It may sound cheesy, but “follow your heart”. It’s really easy to get caught up in the world and in your head. But when you stop and really listen, your heart usually knows what’s best. If your heart starts getting too mushy or confused, go with your gut. Your gut always has your back.
Re-create Rachel’s Cover Look
Step 1: Create your canvas by mixing Becca Cosmetics Liquid Shimmering Perfector in Moonstone into La Mer’s The Soft Fluid Foundation in a 50/50 mixture. The Shimmering Perfector reduces the coverage or heaviness of the foundation, allowing you to still maintain a flawless finish due to the radiant particles reflecting light while allowing your skin texture to shine though!
Step 2: To conceal spots, skin discolouration and dark circles under the eyes, I mix both Light & Medium shade of La Mer’s The Concealer. I always conceal with two shades of concealer to get the perfect blend and coverage. I use the Medium shade to do any spots or on any areas that may need some extra coverage, like around the nose or chin. I’ll then use the Light shade to blend under the eye and across the top of the cheekbones and down the ridge of the nose to give a more highlighted effect.
Step 3: To finish, I used Giorgio Armani’s Pressed Luminous Silk Powder to set both the concealer and foundation to the skin. With a matt-radiant finish G.A’s Pressed Luminous Silk is key to finishing this radiant-skin look and holding it in place throughout the day. Tip: To get a more professional finish like the concealer, I use two shades. The #1 shade going perfectly under the eyes and on any areas I want to really brighten, and the #2 shade ( a more yellow toned powder) across the rest of the face.
Step 4: For eyes to kill in a no-makeup-makeup look, I emphasised the brows by filling and brushing them up with Garbo & Kelly’s Eye Pomade in Cool Blonde, before I curled and double-coated Ms Cook’s lashes top and bottom with MAC Haute & Naughty Mascara.
To finish… I brushed Givenchy Healthy Glow Bronzer in shade #3 from the lash line to brows with NARS Defusing Brush. To add drama and really make the eyes pop with a little makeup application know-how, I dabbed MAC (none-stick) Shine Mixing Medium across the entire lid. Watch as your eyes come to life!
Step 5: To give the face a little shape and autumn warmth without an obvious contoured look, I used my Givenchy Healthy Glow Bronzer in #3 again, and buffed under the cheekbones for a little definition, but particularly around the temples so as to keep the focus on the eyes.
Step 6: To allow the lips to make a statement, I lined the edges in with Urban Decay Glide-on-Lip Pencil in Blackmail – a deep blackberry liner. To finish, I filled the lips with Urban Decays Vice Lip Stick in Venom. The dark lip line against the vivid plum gives a dramatic 3D effect to the lips and finishes the look beautifully.
