The Products That Make 30+ Skin Look Better Than A Teenager’s

Your 30s are amazing. You’re kicking goals, looking hot and still partying with kids in their 20s. However, collagen deterioration is also now a thing, so how do you maintain that glow? What’s the trick to projecting the youthful soul we feel on inside on the outside? For that evergreen youth, read on.

There’s something empowering about being in your 30s.

You’re a woman on your own terms, having spent the last decade figuring out life and love as you know it. Your job is sorted, you know what you want in life and are pretty dang good at decorating a home, whipping up a Masterchef dish, paying bills on time and taking yourself on a European holiday (without asking mum for help).

Far from this being the ‘shelf life’ our grandmas worried about (as if!), being in your 30s in 2018 means embracing who you are and living life on your own terms. Just look at Jess Alba, Miranda Kerr, Keira Nightly and Kirsten Bell as poster girls for whip-smart, stylish and inspiring women.

However, while this is a time of coming into our own, looking in the mirror sometimes feels like our body just doesn’t wanna play fair. While you’re still looking hot and easily pulling or partying with kids in their 20s, collagen deterioration is a thing.

Once you hit your 30s, you may notice your skin is slightly drier and duller in colour. This is because the rate of new cells being produced by your skin is beginning to slow down. You may also notice more fine lines around key areas such as your eyes and mouth.

Clinical Skin Specialist Douglas Periera says that various factors can cause our skin to age, but we shouldn’t be afraid of this process if we take a few easy steps.

“One thing that we cannot change is the natural ageing process”, he says. “With time, we all get visible lines on our face and reduced facial volume. It is natural for our face to lose some of its youthful fullness. Our genes largely control when these changes occur, while our environment and lifestyle choices can cause our skin to age prematurely.

However, don’t get out the zimmer frame just yet –  all these shifts just mean that you need a few lifestyle (and product) upgrades to give your complexion the same staying power that you had ten years ago.

While you may still adore your glass of vino and mug(s) of coffee to get through the day, add an extra 1.5L of water with lemon to that routine to flush out those toxins. Easy!

Or, while stress is another source of ageing, add some yoga to that spin-class schedule and deep breathing to your meditation routine… and eternal zen is yours.

While there is a host of powerful anti-ageing in-salon treatments on the market (such as needling, neocollagenesis remodelling therapy and dermal infusion, to name a few), the simple approach still works best for maintenance and prevention. Douglas recommends “eating clean and organic is always going to support healthy skin, reducing or cutting out sugars and processed foods. Focusing on a good gut health will not only promote a healthy body and reduce inflammation but will also provide you with a healthy glowing skin.”

Douglas, who owns Clinical Skin Therapy in Sydney and deals with a large variety of complexion symptoms and concerns, cites 5 key reasons for the ageing process:

1.Collagen Breakdown

“This represents 75% of the skin’s dry weight. Thus, the quantity and the quality play a major role in the skin’s appearance.”

NIP IT IN THE BUTT: Use LED light once a week to restore collagen in the skin.

2. Photo Defence

“Scientific studies have shown that repeated ultraviolet (UV) exposure breaks down collagen and impairs the synthesis of new collagen. The sun also attacks our elastin.”

NIP IT IN THE BUTT: Slather SPF50+ daily and remember to reapply – sunblock only lasts 3 hours.

3. Oxidation

“This process starts with free radicals, which are highly reactive small molecules that can damage virtually any molecule in the body, including the important cellular structures found in the body’s largest organ – the skin. This free radical damage sadly tends to create havoc in every layer of the skin hypodermis, dermis and epidermis. ”

NIP IT IN THE BUTT: Using products that have Vitamin E, Retinol, vitamin A on the skin and eating foods like carrots, apricots avocado help defend against free radicals.

4. Inflammation

“This is the skin’s first line of defence against foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses. Whilst it is helpful in the short term, excessive (chronic) inflammation is one of the most common themes in early-onset skin ageing.”

NIP IT IN THE BUTT: Alkalise your system with plenty of wild-caught fatty fish, olive oil, tomatoes and leafy greens… while going easy on processed foods and excess caffeine for a while.

5. Glycation (fancy word for too much sugar)

“Sad to say, sugar does make you age faster. Glycation occurs when excess bodily glucose molecules link to the skin’s collagen and elastin fibres, which can lead to damage such as laxity.”

NIP IT IN THE BUTT: Cut down on sugar with full-fat Greek yoghurt and low GI fruits such as pears and blueberries.

As well as some simple lifestyle changes, let’s give you what you came for – the super powerful products to save for and invest in your 30’s… to give your 20-year-old friends a run for their baby-smooth skin in the youth stakes.

BY TERRY Hyaluronic Sheer Nude

Plump out dehydrated lips with the decadent nourishment and sheer tint of natural colour. With a balm-gel like texture, this gorgeous range of nude lipstick melts onto the lips, smoothing, filling out any tiny lines and dressing them in a sheer tint of glossy colour.

Formulated with Hyaluronic Acid Microspheres, this lush lipstick works to plump and hydrate, making the lips appear volumised and feel healthier. And for that hit of refreshing calm? The soft smell of violets, roses and irises, as well as light notes of mimosa, raspberry, vanilla and musk, are released upon application. Yum!

GIORGIO ARMANI Luminous Silk Foundation

When women are pregnant, they ‘glow’ due to higher oestrogen production. Capture the same flush without getting knocked up with this award-winning foundation. GA Luminous Silk features exclusive Micro-fil technology, allowing this hydrating fluid to glide on seamlessly with a silky texture and all-day, buildable coverage. It’s perfect to plump fine lines and give the skin that radiant, air-brushed finish.

Being the InStyle Best Beauty Buy award-winner for “Best Liquid Foundation” and “Perfect Match, #1 Makeup Artist’s Choice” for 10th Year in a Row (!!) this is my go-to foundation for that classic, movie star skin.

CHANTECAILLE Cheek Gelee Blush

There’s nothing like a flush of crimson on the cheeks to communicate your energised, radiant and ‘loving life’ spirit. This glistening gel-to-cream blush imparts a soft, nymph-like tint with a hint of pearl that is truly on top of the world.

Incredibly hydrating, the sheer yet vibrant pigments easily blend into your skin for a long-lasting, healthy flush of colour and a fresh radiance. Soft, womanly and sophisticated – I love it.

LA MER  Lifting Contour Serum Grande

La Mer is the mecca of age- preventive gold, and this sculpting serum is set to visibly elevate contours and transform facial definition – perfect to boost elastin. The new seabom Lifting Ferment helps to promote skin’s natural collagen production, thus supporting a slimmer, more toned jawline.

Furthermore, La Mer’s precious signature cell-renewing Miracle Broth helps to visibly firm and lift the complexion. After cleansing, apply a thin layer to clean face and neck with fingertips massage in and allow this rich cream mask to infuse skin for 10 decadent minutes.

ENDOTA Peptide Firming Moisturiser

I adore Endota for their authentic and holistic approach to beauty. They rightly celebrate a woman’s beauty at any age and have delicious products and treatments to amplify and complement that journey. For a woman in her 30s, this Peptide Firming moisturiser is formulated with advanced hexapeptides to guard against wrinkles, so as to replenish, hydrate and fortify your skin.

With Vitamins A, C and E to combat free radical damage and Sodium Hyaluronate provide deep hydration, firming and plumping effects, lather it on daily for nourishing plumpness.

THE BEAUTY CHEF Collagen Inner Beauty Boost

Beauty really does start inside out, and no one nourishes this philosophy quite like The Beauty Chef. This organic, bio-fermented probiotic concentrate is designed to support the skin’s production of collagen and promote a radiant, plump-looking complexion.

It is literally designed to address skin firming and fine lines, free radical damage, and aid in skin maintenance. Containing a blend of potent, natural anti-oxidants and more than six billion naturally occurring prebiotics, it balances the digestive tract and boosts skin vitality.

Estee Lauder Victoria Beckham Morning Aura Illuminating Creme

“Beautiful skin is the starting point of the entire collection,” says VB of the hero product in her Estée Lauder lineup – and it’s an ethos that women around the world are lapping up, with this creme all but sold out on Net-A-Porter for the last few months!

Why has it flown off the shelves? ‘Morning Aura’ is part-moisturiser, part-brightening primer to give the skin a fresh morning glow for that dewy no-make-up-make-up look.

Heavy foundation can settle into facial creases and even make an 18-year-old look older, so this illuminating creme counters that with micro-pearls for a polished, perfected look. Wear it alone or as a beautiful base for an enviable daily complexion.

The eye area is delicate. So, if you’d rather those laugh lines were smiling on the inside than on your face, have I got a treat for you. Formulated with Dermal Stim Factors, Re:Firm Eye mimics the skin’s own regenerative compounds, while DMAE  improves elasticity and resilience of skin around the eye. We’ll take it!

By smoothing and tightening, this potent serum is perfect to address the early signs of ageing around the eye area and prevent further damage.
