Max Made

There is no denying, like so many Australians, Ita Buttrose is a icon of mine. So when the opportunity to work with such a legend arises, you jump right?
I grew up watching and listening to Ita as so many of us did. I can’t tell you how many debates I have had on what colour and brand her signature apricot lipstick was … Estee Lauder Signature Lipstick in Portofino Coral, she informs me is in fact the right answer! Yes I couldn’t help myself, it was one of the first things I asked as we chatted and I painted her porcelain face with my brushes.

I really wanted to push the boundaries and show Ita in a way that we hadn’t seen before. Jordan (the photographer) and I talked about creating a classic, smokey eye that referenced a sexy 70’s shape, to complement and exaggerate Ita’s captivating eyes.

I used Dior’s Diorshow Liner in Carbon, which I completely lined the perimeter of the eye with. To get this smokey slightly 70’s shaped eye, I blended NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Bengali (Chocolate Brown) into the liner, blending the shadow and the liner into the lash line and then up and into the contour of the eye before fading it out. To give that 70’s shape you want to blend the colour out in a slightly square-ish shape at the outer corners of the eye to finish. I filled Ita’s brows using Tom Ford Brow Sculpture Pencil In Blonde before topping her pre-curled lashes up using Benefit There’re Real Mascara. Tip; When drawing in brows, draw the hair on in small upwards-like strokes. This will enable you to fill and thicken the brows, resulting in a more natural finish.

To finish I used Becca Cosmetics Nude Lip Liner Pencil in Nougat on the lips. This dual-ended  pencil is perfect to enhance the shape of your lips by using the darker lip coloured end to line and plump and the lighter nude to fill.

In the end I did two styles on Ita. The first was a exaggerated version of her day-to-day hair and the second a sleek brushed back style we had been inspired to do after seeing a image of Lauren Hutton. With a little convincing I managed to talk Ita in to giving it a go. Which is a big deal when you think of who I am negotiating with!

To start, I blow dried her hair using KMS Add Volume Body Building Detangler Spray and a medium sized round brush to create as much volume as possible while still having movement and a look of softness to it’s finish. To style and add shape throughout the day I used KMS Hair Stay Medium Hold Hair Spray. What is nice about this spray is you can brush throughout the day and reset without weighing your hair down and it becoming ashy or flakey.

To slick the hair back for the second look, I combed through KMS Tame Frizz Tame Cream to achieve that creamy definition and a drop of KMS Tame De-Frizz Oil for added shine.

A special thank you to all the team for such a amazing day and of course to Sunday Style for allowing me the opportunity to work my magic on a true icon.
