If our obsession with Instagram’s sparkle filter is anything to go by, we are nowhere near the end of the glitter revolution…
If recent award shows could tell a tale, they would hint that the glitter and sequins sweeping the runway are not abating. And judging by our obsession with the Kiri Kiri and all that sparkles, the glitter revolution still reigns strong.
Saorisie Ronan sparkled sans mascara at the SAG awards with a peachy eyelid shimmer and not much else, suffice that it made a statement. Lupita Nyongo’s gunmetal shadow also added sultry vibes to an otherwise innocent, fresh-faced look. And then there’s my new kween, Margot Robbie, whos near-nude face was offset by some glittery shadow.
Glitter also reigned supreme at the SS18 shows, where a plethora of exits from Victoria Beckham to Gucci and Marc Jacobs shimmered with sequins that begged to be translated to lips and eyes.
The memo is, sequins are for life, and not just at the Studio 54 party.
If our obsession with Instagram’s sparkle filter is anything to go by, we are nowhere near the end of the glitter revolution.
There is nothing like light to add radiance and dimension to the face, and glitter is the most striking – and tricky – of these textures to master.
Those who do transcend beyond the usual shimmer and gloss makeup to master glitter are rewarded with celestial beauty, where your features reflect light and have you sparkling like a goddess. If you fail, however, you will look like you stuck tin foil to your eyelids. Not pretty.
Thus, here is the MaxMade glitter guide to ensure you are journeying with the light (and leave the tinsel look at home).
Victoria Beckham x Estée Lauder Eye Foil
Want to rock some glitter, while still looking subtle and sophisticated? Then you will love this full-proof eye tub in a clear, non-tacky gel. Simply dab this product on your eyelid… and follow with mascara. That is all! With a high gloss and glitter shine, VB has created a soft gold finish that is not abrasive or offensive. With no tricky layering or complicated steps, this is a low-key fashion girl favourite.
Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner
What can I say: a good glitter liner is about tackiness (of the viscosity kind) and the glitter ratio, and this awesome find has this duo dancing on your lids in droves. Glitter is still, ultimately, flakes of metal, so you do have to go over your line a few times to lay down the full sparkle effect. This glitter liner, however, with its long-lasting finish and terrific brush, is a clear leader in the sparkle category.
Fenty Galaxy Eye Shadow Palette
Get your finger painting fix with Fenty: with a mix of metal and glitter shadows, dabbing the product on with your fingers will give it the best effect! A finger melts the texture into the skin like butter, while a brush throws around flakes of glitter everywhere (except the eyes!). A common makeup artist trick (most notably, Charlotte Tilbury’s), is when she wants to hold glitter on the eye, CT rubs her finger in the tub and then sticks the residue to the skin, leaving a sheer and creamy shine effect, rather than that of messy tinsel. Tip: Finish the look with some kohl liner on the inner rim of the eye, such as the Tom Ford Beauty Eye Kohl Intense in Onyx.
TOO FACED Melted Metal Liquified Metallic Lipstick
How do you achieve a longer, smoother, sparkling pout that doesn’t peel or flake? With this amazing, liquified lipstick. For the mouth, a shimmer is better than traditional glitter because it’s smoother on the lips, with an arguably better finish. Glitter can chunk and lodge itself into your lip colour, while a metallic saturation still gives a coveted shimmer without the grit.
Save the chunkier glitter for the eyes where there’s no friction between other products and keep your lips kissable with a ‘wetter’ finish.
Stila Magnificent Metals Glitter & Glow Liquid Eyes
Liquid eyeshadows have really changed the way we can achieve full coverage on our lids – with little to no expertise required. Simply paint this on to your lid in line with your lash line, smudge with your fingertip and go! Stila’s Metal Glitter & Glow Liquid Shadows work exactly the same way. What I love about these luscious light reflecting colours is the density of colour and sparkle that melt effortlessly across the eye and stay put for an eternity.
Makeup For Ever Diamond Powder
Still feeling like you can amplify your light beams? Finish your look by dabbing your finger into this tub of superfine glitter, from opal to golden-bronze, and press onto your lips, temples and eyelids for a final dusting of superfine sparkles to take your look to a whole new level!
