Put dewy, youthful skin in the spotlight with this runway-approved look from AVON.
Sometimes, the best way to make a statement is in the nude. Nude-toned cheeks, eyes and lips that is, to showcase a strong outfit against a flawless complexion.
I saw this visual come to life last week, when I served as make-up director for Michael Lo Sordo’s #MBFWA Resort 18 show.
MSL’s collection channeled a high voltage, accidentally-sexy secretary look: think loosely tailored swirling satin gowns juxtaposed with racy red stockings and lace body suits peering suggestively behind cutaway details.
To counter the sensuous intensity of each look, I wanted to create a more innocent nude-on-nude palette, drawing the focus back onto the skin, courtesy of Avon. When your clothes make such an impact, it’s better to keep your make-up simple for balance… and I chose a more innocent appearance to counter the come-hither quality of the garments on show.
Every look begins with the skin anyway, and the key to creating a more youthful look is all in how you leverage your complexion. To create a fresh visage, my choice of foundation was Avon’s Flawless Foundation. With light-to-medium coverage, ‘Flawless’ leaves the skin looking exactly that – on the younger side of dew where you can powder lightly to control any unwanted shine. With a modern formulation, it’s perfection to apply, gliding effortlessly even on mature and drier skins. In short, it lives up to its name.
Now, when you want to draw the attention back to the skin’s natural glow, the trick is to accessorise your complexion with variations of nude (opaque) shades that follow the natural shade on your eyes, cheeks and lips. Think in themes of pink, peach, mauve and neutral (yellow) NUDES that are an extension of the tones in your natural features.
So, if you have a mauve undertone to your lips, choose an nude lipstick with a slight mauve undertone, as this will compliment and enhance your overall natural colouring. The same with your eyes – if you have a pink undertone to your lids, choose a shadow palette that is made up of similar nude-pink tones. Makes sense?
Here is why this works: layering with your natural colouring will draw the attention back to your skin. It’s like a surround sound effect…. A no makeup-makeup look that will have your onlookers guessing how is it that you’re beaming with light with such a minimal makeup approach? Keep ’em wondering I say, and stow this handy trick up your sleeve for when you’re feeling racy from the neck down.
