How To Have a Brush Kit Like A Professional MUA

This my personal edit of brushes prescribed to perfect your complexion like a pro.

Have you ever tried bronzing, blending, highlighting and concealing your face just with your fingers? Chances are, you ended up looking more like a face-painted tiger at a children’s party than a contoured, cheek-boned goddess.

Good brushes are the helping hands of amazing makeup and the key to product integrating beautifully into the skin and facial curves to work its magic.

So which concealer, bronzer, foundation and powder brushes are my go-to allies for the perfect base?

MAC 168 Large Angled Brush

This angled beauty is my go-to for contouring the face with a powder or a bronzer. It’s all about the defined yet rounded edge of the brush which nestles into the best angles on the face for a head start to the perfect definition and blend.

Charlotte Tilbury Blusher Brush

I honestly can’t live without this brush. I love blush, and this brush gives me joy with how well it applies colour to the skin and brings together all other makeup. As tightly packed as she is, this beauty opens into the perfect fluffy end to allow you even coverage as the colour lands on your cheeks. Once applied, it actually looks like a gentle dusting of colour that blends out with seamless edges. Tip: for a more youthful look, I actually apply blush off this brush in a more dabbing motion onto the apples of the cheeks. There’s something about the way this brush has been cut and packed to give you the perfect pinched-cheek look, with just enough blend.

My Kit Co Flawless Powder Brush 0.8

Smaller than the CT Blusher brush, I use this brush when I need more control in where and how much setting powder I apply. Getting the perfect coverage can make or break the look of your foundation and wear, so I can’t stress how important it is to have control over the amount. The 0.8 give me a good ratio in coverage, but also allows me to get into all the nooks and crannies of the face.

My Kit My Ultra Multi Co 1.7

I use this little multi-brush as my go-to face highlighter for both compact matte-setting powders and metallic ones, depending on the finish I want on the skin. It blends powder evenly and beautifully over both concealer or foundation for that matte highlighting look, and does equal magic with metallics when I want to catch light on the cheekbones and other high points of the face.

Fenty 110 Fondation Brush

A newie but a goodie, I’m using this brush to apply foundation in a circular motion to the entire face. It holds both liquid and creamy foundation all the way to the outer edges of the brush due to how tightly it’s packed. The bristles are super soft and feel beautiful on the skin, while the rounded end gives great blend and helps you get in and around the facial angles quickly and efficiently. As a Capricorn, I’m not one for change, but this brush has quickly claimed a new spot in my heart.

NARS angles foundation Brush

Im a big fan of contouring with cream or liquid foundations and concealers to give shape to the face. For 99% of my looks, I actually use a foundation with liquid bronze luminizer to get contour and colour – rather than an actual bronzer – and this is where this baby comes into play. I just love how this brush is angled and how soft yet firm it is, allowing me to get into all the right edges and the right blend to shape the skin.

MAC 197Sh Duo Fibre Square Brush

I call this the ‘skin retoucher’ of brushes. It’s what I use to highlight the skin with concealer and blow out the under-eye area, highlight cheekbones and the centre line of the nose. The secret is in the rectangular shape and the short bristles that retouch the skin for a blending and smoothing effect. Just so you know, there is not one look where I don’t use this magic-maker!

Zoeva 142 concealer Buffer

This is my go-to concealer brush for more detailed coverage, such as around the eyes and nose areas, or covering spots where you want to build coverage with a professional blend.
