Not all concealers are created equally! Discover the power of a ‘highlighting concealer’ and which one is made for you…
If I had to pick 1 item that is a staple in every makeup kit and the one product I see woman struggle with, it would be a concealer! Whether you’ve got problem skin or not, the right breed of concealer can highlight your complexion for a more contoured look, cover bags or spots, even skin tone for those of you that don’t use foundation. Either way – concealer is a serious business and a makeup “must have,” but they’re not all created equally!
No longer are we concealing those dreaded under eye bags with heavy concealers that make skin look thick and cakie. Thanks to modern technology we are now ‘highlighting’ our less than favourite areas with super-lightweight concealers that work by the theory of attracting and reflecting light rather than masking the skin with a heavy coverage product.
Whether you want to blend them into makeup free skin to even skin tone or brighten, or you want to give your foundation and complexion a more 3D contoured look, a ‘highlighting concealer’ is the key!
Like the common concealer there are a series of coverages and finishes that I’m going to break down and show you what I have learnt through trial and error. Either way, it’s the one beauty essential no woman should ever be without…

By Terry Touché Veloutée Enlightening Concealer Brush
My new obsession, By Terry’s Veloutée Enlightening Concealer is a light to medium coverage with maximum light reflecting properties. Layered over your foundation for a more refined complexion or blended on top of your moisturiser to even skin tone and brighten your complexion for a more natural finish. Tip; Apply directing from the applicator to any problem areas including all the high points of the face and blend in a dabbing motion using your finger-tip! NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer
With one of the best colour selections on the market, I’ve been known to do a whole face with these radiant light reflecting concealers- that’s highlighting AND contouring! With a versatile luminous coverage NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer gets to truly shine on a more dry skin. Gliding over pigmentation, break outs and dry to flaky skin for a hydrated, radiant and even complexion. Tip: Use a damp Beauty Blender when tackling drier skin types. Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage
What I love about this particular product other, than it having one of my most favourite user-friendly applicators, is the versatility you have in coverage! Urban Decay’s Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage gives you the flexibility of blending the product out more a more sheer, luminous finish or maximising your coverage to disguise pigment, dark circles, spots or maximising your highlighting and contouring for and event or red-carpet scenario. Tip; I would recommend this product for a woman that needs more coverage! Powder with a translucent powder when and where necessary.

Maybelline Lumi Touche Highlighting Concealer
Experience brighter skin more radiant skin with this light to medium coverage gel-based concealer. What I love about his gel formula is its capability of blending into the skin. Perfect for those of us that suffer from our concealer gathering in the lines around our eyes. With several shades to choose from that sit more on the pinker/peach side of things, this beauty is perfect for fairer skin types and or those of use that suffer from dark circles that have more of purple-tone!
Hi Max!
I love Dior Star concealer. Like the Urban Decay, it is for those wanting more coverage. It is long lasting and most vitally, doesn’t cause breakouts!
Hi Cat! Oh I love the Dior Star! I do find the U.D is a little more yellow based and not as drying, enhance my decision to have it in my top 5! In my experience I have never experienced any breakout – however all skin types are different therefor making it a trial and error situation. i will say most causes of breakouts in my opinion are due to the user contaminating their products due to bad hygiene. I prefer to dab out a small amount of product on the back of my hand and work with the product from there. Hope this helps. xMM
Hi Max! I love your recommendations, and recently purchased the one from By Terry after seeing it here. Its now my HG!! Just wondering if you could share tips on how you clean the By Terry Touché Veloutée brush?
Thanks so much, you’re an incredible makeup artist and I’m amazed that you make time to do blog posts on top of everything else!
Hi jenny! thats so great to hear! Glad you love the By Terry as much as I do. I wash them with a little baby shampoo and rinse really thoroughly. If you prefer you can use a brush cleaner. I just get worried as its alcohol based and it can react on the skin of you don’t rinse them thoroughly. lots of love xxMM
i love the By Terry but have been considering trying the Urban Decay one, which one u think is better beween the two?
I favour the By Terry! It depends on the coverage I guess? The Urban Decay has more coverage… xMM
