It’s all in the preparation! 3 easy steps to conquering the picture-perfect top knot!

Step 1; The key to getting that perfect light and fluffy texture not only in the top knot itself, but also through the roots is all in the prep of the hair. I rough dried Kevin Murphy’s Hair.Resort Spray through the hair from roots to ends using my fingers and the hair-dryer to get as much volume and texture in the hair as possible. Hair.Resort.Spray is the perfect blend of a sea salt and a volumiser – meaning it’s strong enough to give serious volume and lift at the roots but won’t weigh down the mid-lengths and ends. Once hair is dry, use a bore bristle brush (Lady Jayne Styler) and backcomb your hair from roots to ends before brushing completely out. What this does is it gives the hair this beautiful fluffy, light texture.

Step 2; Flip your head up side down and brush your hair up ( I left out the fringe in this case) into a pony that sits just above the crown of your head. The further forward on your head the more prominent the bun is going to be. Once you are happy with the position, secure your hair with a none slip elastic. I use Hair Bungee Elastic (see below) in this situation as they allow me to fasten the pony without loosing tension. How to use; Hook one of the hooks on the end of the elastic in the hair and start twisting the elastic around the base of the pony between your hand and your head. Once you have got a good tension, hook the other end of the elastic in the base of the pony.

hair-bungee-tripleStep 3; To ensure your bun is going to have that perfect amount of texture give the pony (and in this situation the fringe) a good spray with Evo Water Kill Dry Shampoo before shaking the excess out. Twist hair loosely around the base of the pony forming a bun-like shape. Don’t over think or work the twisting of the bun as the beauty of a top knot is it looks ‘effortless and care-free’. That, and over handling the hair will undo all the hard work you put in to get that beautiful airy texture.

To finish…Once you have pinned the top knot into place, starting pulling or pinching  a few random pieces out here and there through the bun, and of course your hair line. This is when all those baby hairs are going to come in handy – just to give it that slightly dishevelled “I have personality’ look! Give it a very light spray of theBalm En Root Flexible Hold Hairspray once you are happy with the finish just to give it a little extra grit and hold. Note; Less is alway more as we don’t want to weigh the hair down. The benefit of  using theBalm En Root Flexible Hold Hairspray is it’s super fine spray and the fact that you can brush it out if the hair gets too heavy.
